2020 Football Season
Dear Parents and Players,

Representatives from the 18 clubs that form the Greater Eastside Junior Football Association (GEJFA) Council have been working hard this offseason to determine the best way to move forward with a Youth Football season during the current COVID-19 pandemic. One decision the Council made early-on was, based on each Club’s close alignment with their respective high school programs, GEJFA would only have a Fall 2020 season if our high school football teams also competed this Fall.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced on July 21, 2020 that there would not be a Fall 2020 high school football season. Instead, they have proposed a modified 2020-2021 Sports Season Calendar that would have high school football season begin February 22, 2021 and end May 9, 2021 (tentative). Based on this new WIAA directive and GEJFA’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all children, GEJFA has made the painful decision to cancel the Fall 2020 Youth Football season.

The GEJFA Council also voted to approve an exploration of a possible Spring 2021 season that would coincide with the WIAA’s high school football calendar. The first step will be to solicit feedback from GEJFA player parents via an online survey. Based upon survey feedback, the GEJFA Council will convene in October to make a decision on whether or not we can begin to plan for a possible Spring 2021 season. Expect to be contacted by your respective GEJFA Club with the survey link in August.

Provide a positive and enjoyable experience for all participants; help to build positive self-esteem for players; teach team participation and responsibility; teach participants to respect and honor opponents and all other participants (coaches, officials, parents); teach sportsmanship and fair play; teach football skills in an environment where players compete with other players of comparable age and weight; and teach all participants how to win, how to lose, and how to do both with dignity.

The Greater Eastside Junior Football Association (GEJFA) was formed by the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club in 1963 to provide contact football in a program that respects the Boys and Girls Club philosophy. GEJFA serves all youth between the ages of 8 and 14. There are five levels of play based on an age/weight formula to ensure that players compete against players of like size and age. The levels are Rookie, Cub, Sophomore, Junior Varsity and, Varsity. There are 22 independent franchised Clubs that comprise the GEJFA, representing the youth of the Bellevue, Mercer Island, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Duvall, Carnation, Snoqualmie, North Bend, Issaquah, East Renton, Newcastle, Bainbridge Island, and Edmonds. Each Club has geographical boundaries, which in most cases, are the same or similar to the local high school. The GEJFA junior football program is unique in its high number of participants and rules to ensure the equitable playing time for all players.
